Testing the winch

The winch design seemed to work well and the travel end points can be adjusted in the transmitter. The total travel distance is just over 450mm. A second winch was made and it was checked that it is possible to remove the winch assembly through the main hatchway, although it is necessary to remove the mast as well.

This is the mainsail winch in place for testing. The mainsheet will come through the deck via a brass sleeve and up to the boom, where it will run out to the transom. The 450mm travel on the winch should just give enough movement for the boom to travel out.

 

Katie's Rudder

I had hoped to use rods from the servo but this wouldn't work, so the answer will be wire/cable, which can be adjusted via the threaded clevis pins.

The tiller was made by laminating some strips of wood and slides into the head of the rudder. It has to be removeable so the rudder can be detached. Although the tiller is a push fit, there will need to some form of "pin" to hold it securely.

The two side pieces hold the mast vertical, while the square shown below will hold the fore and aft position, once the mast rake has been determined.

 

Winch Design

This is the initial design for the winch, there will be two, a port and starboard version. This will be removable through the centre hatch. It uses some electrical trunking which is supported by a piece of aluminium channel. The winch is supported by some 3mm plywood. There is a slider made from acrylic and there will be ball bearing blocks at each end of the track. It should give travel of 450mm. This should give enough travel for the two jibs. However, the mainsail/boom does need more travel than this, if the mainsheet is attached to the stern of the boat, as on full size models. The main boom will go out by 45 degrees with a travel of 450mm, which may be enough. Another solution would be to attach the mainsheet to the centre of the boom. Thoughts for the future.

The next task will be to fit the servo for the rudder and get this working.

 

Deck Beams

The exact position of the foot of the mast support will be added later. The drawings show that the hatch on the foredeck is small and offset to port. This is also reflected when looking at full size boats. However, to help gain access I've decided to make this hatch way slightly wider, so it stretches across both sides of the boat. The plan is to use two sail winches, with the front of the track either side of the mast, so access will be essential.

Bristol Pilot Cutter - A Book

 Completing a search for a book about Pilot Cutters didn't show many results apart from 

"The Sailing Pilots of the Bristol Channel" written by Peter Stuckey and first published in 1977. However, a second edition was published 1999, which is enlarged with further information. Manged to find a S/H copy at a reasonable price. Hopefully it will be helpful.
